The Garden

When the Ainola building was completed the plot was about two and a half acres in size. However, Jean Sibelius then purchased some adjacent land, extending the property to just under ten acres altogether. The northern side of the plot has always consisted of natural forest, while the sunny southern end was an extensive and productive garden. Some of the apple trees and berry bushes remain, and the flower garden with its plants and walkways is still as Aino Sibelius planned, cleared and planted it.

The grave area

The last resting place of Jean and Aino Sibelius is in the garden at Ainola beneath the apple trees. The couple were married for more than 65 years.

The bronze gravestone plaque was designed by the architect Aulis Blomstedt, the husband of Jean Sibelius’ youngest daughter.
