The leading comprehensive work on the life and compositions of Jean Sibelius is the biography compiled by Erik Tawaststjerna Jean Sibelius 1 - 5, published in Finnish by Otava, Helsinki 1965-88. There is a Swedish language edition of the book (Söderström, Helsingfors 1991-1997) and a three-volume English edition (Faber & Faber, London, 1976-1997). One volume has also been published in Russian (Muzyka, Moskova 1981).

Erik T. Tawaststjerna has also edited a revised and richly illustrated single-volume Finnish language edition of his Sibelius biography Jean Sibelius, published by Otava, Helsinki 1997.
